You (or your kid) are entering Track & Field season. You’ve got the spikes down: “S” is for sprinting, “D” is for distance, et cetera. What about training shoes, though? You want those spikes to last all season, so you need to train in something else. Here’s a handy guide to shoes for your everyday training.
Sprints (100-400m, Hurdles, Jumps)
A mistake a lot of running stores make is suggesting sprinters don’t need any cushion in their shoes. A mistake a lot of coaches make is thinking sprinters need stability in their shoes. While it’s true that racing flats are responsive and meant to go faster, the amount of force that sprinters are generating on each step means that their feet and shins can feel torn up, without enough cushion. In terms of support, take it from a flat-footed 400m runner: Sprinters are generally not going to injure themselves in neutral shoes, even if they over-pronate. Aim for shoes with lower heel-to-toe drops and responsive forefoot cushioning, promoting a midfoot-landing stride.
These are a little easier to get right. Most running stores and coaches are more familiar with distance training and the shoes for it, but here are some standouts. Start with lighter shoes and see what type of cushion and how much support you’re comfortable with.
Below are links to buy the above-mentioned shoes at the lowest-found prices. If you or your athlete still aren’t sure about which shoe would fit best, I urge you to go to a running specialty store and get fitted. Buy the shoe from there. They did do the work, after all, and support your local businesses!
